Helge Helme was born in Roskilde, Denmark and studied at the Technical School, Roskile from 1914-1915 and then at the Danish Royal Academy of Fine Arts from 1918-1920.

Helme was particularly interested in the female form.  And his many paintings of women capture them at work, at rest and engaged in daily activities.  His female figures often have long languid limbs and are elegantly posed.   Helme was more interested in perfecting the composition of his works rather than capturing individual personality.

Helme travelled to Britain, France, the Netherlands and Germany in the 1920s and 30s, developing his artistic skills during his travels. Back in Denmark he set up his own painting school and devoted considerable time to education.
