Tove Marika Jansson was one of the most celebrated illustrators of the 20th century, and is known internationally as the creator of the beloved Moomin characters and books, a hugely successful global phenomenon which continues to stretch across generations. Born in Helsinki to the graphic artist, Signe Hammarsten and the sculptor Viktor Jansson, Jansson studied art in Helsinki, Stockholm and in Paris, holding her first solo art exhibition in 1943. Her enchanting Moomin series, which began with the 1945 book ‘The Moomins and the Great Flood’ blends gentle humour, philosophical depth, and timeless visual design.

Beyond the Moomins, Jansson was an accomplished fine artist and author. Her murals and painting, such as the renowned ‘Party in the City' and ‘Party in the Countryside’ frescoes at the Helsinki Art Museum, as well as novels like ‘The Summer Book’, showcase her extraordinary range. Tove Jansson’s work remains a cornerstone of Finnish cultural heritage and continues to inspire audiences across the globe through museums, literature, and the ever-popular Moomin brand.
