'The surrealness of Iceland's nature cannot be overstated. My attempts to capture its unusual beauty seem feeble and futile but are nonetheless a compulsion. My forefathers always looked at the landscape as having a personhood. This is a feeling that anyone who has visited Iceland understands since the mountains, glaciers, rivers and rocks feel as if they have a personality of their own. This is something that I try to convey in my work.
The Slovenian philosopher Slavoj Žižek calls Iceland 'the country that God forgot to finish'. I understand this statement but disagree. Iceland is as finished as it should be.'
Icelander, Thórarinn Ingi Jónsson was educated at the Icelandic College of Art and Design, Ontorio College of Art and Design and the Acadmy of Architecture, Art and Design in Prague, Czech Republic. Jónsson has participated in solo exhibitions and group exhibitions in Iceland, Germany, the Czech Republic and Canada. This is the first time his work has been exhibited in the U.K.
Jónsson's paintings give a surreal take on the complicated and extraordinary beauty of Iceland's nature and landscape.
