Oskar Bergman is one of Sweden’s most loved artists of the twentieth century. Characteristic of his work is meticulously detailed urban and pastoral landscapes with vibrant colours and shimmering light. His works celebrate nature through their portrayal of the sea, forests, lakes and meadows. His works very rarely feature people. Bergman worked mainly in watercolour but also in oil, gouache and printmaker.

Oskar Bergman was both and mostly worked in Stockholm. He studied at Tekniska aftonskolan (now Konstfack) for four years and made several study tours around Europe. Bergman was very inspired by Japanese woodcuts and by symbolism and among his contemporaries he admired Gustaf Fjaestad’s snowy landscape paintings.

There is currently an exhibition ‘Still Nature. Oskar Bergman’ showing at Thielska Galleriet in Stockholm open until 20th August.
